One of the first purchases you will make as a dog owner is a collar. Whether your dog is nothing but a lazy companion or if you own a more energetic athlete of a troublemaker, there are many reasons a collar is important. Not only can you use it to identify your pet, you can even customize it and turn it into a fun accessory for your dog. Some of the christmas dog collars can be pretty basic but there are also a lot that come in a variety of designs and colors you can interchange every now and then to match your clothing when you take your dog out on a walk. With so many options, it is surprising how overwhelming the choices can actually become if you are looking for a dog collar that is really unique or fitted to your dog’s personality. Of course, beside the looks, there are several other things you will want to keep in mind before you buy one.

The first thing you should do right away is size your dog for the collar. Dogs come in all sizes, and so do their necks. Getting a collar that is too tight probably won’t choke the dog right away, but it will make them very uncomfortable. That’s because the collar will only get tighter as they continue to grow. Then of course if the collar is too large, your dog can just slide their necks out if they don’t like wearing the collar. Use a tape measure to size the dog’s neck for the collar. This will make the job of buying one that much easier, whether you decide to ship online or at a local pet store. If you find a particular collar you are interested in, you can ask a store attendant if it is available in your dog’s size, or if you are shopping online, you can just check the available sizes on stock. Fit the collar comfortably once you get back home by making sure you can insert two of your fingers in the space between the collar and the dog’s neck.

Most dog owners are okay with using leather personalized dog collars, but a customized collar, or at least one that features a lot of design elements will go a long way in helping you identify your dog even when they are far away from you. Collars can come in a variety of different designs and colors, so you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. Nylon is the most common choice because it is soft and comfortable. Chain collars are commonly used on bigger dogs. Some collars even have attachments, accessories, or are adorned with things like rhinestones for something that is totally different.
