Anyone that had the opportunity to keep or to live with dogs would know that these animals not only have huge appetites but are also inclined to eat things that humans find disgusting. The habit of eating non-food items is called pica. Although dog owners find it hard to understand the dog’s propensity to eat non-food items, pica is a normal behavior of dogs. One of the non-edible things that dogs love to eat are rocks.

Puppies are more inclined to eat rocks. Puppies are naturally inquisitive and one way of discovering their world is by using their mouth. A pet parent will be amused by the pet’s chewing as if what is being chewed is bubble gum. The habit of eating rocks can endanger the life of the pet. The soft tissues of the mouth can be wounded by the hard rock. Swallowed, the rock can cause diarrhea as it can really affect the delicate digestive tract of the dog. What would be more alarming is the fact that a rather large rock ingested by the dog can be life threatening if an esophagus or an intestinal tract blockage is created.

We know that dogs are voracious eaters. Dog owners would always want to have the best pet unfortunately, dogs do have the inclination to develop not only socially unacceptable behaviors but dangerous ones as well. The dog’s habit of eating rocks will still puzzle a lot of pet owners. The habit of eating rocks can signify that the pet has a medical problem such as brain diseases. If an underlying medical concern was ruled out, the rock eating habit of the pet can be attributed to behavioral problems.

The dog’s propensity to eat rocks can be caused by boredom, anxiety or stress. Dogs would always love to get the attention of the family because these are social animals. Dogs that do not get any attention from the family will be bored. The unacceptable behaviors of dogs can be associated with boredom. Bored dogs eat rocks. The habit of eating rocks can be the dog’s way of attracting the master’s attention.

Various lab tests would be necessary to know the health concerns of humans. The same tests and examinations would not be necessary for dogs as nature has provided these animals with the capability to know what is wrong with their system. A nutrient deficient diet will entice a dog to eat rocks in an effort to correct the imbalance. When the dog starts to develop a craving for rocks ask yourself if you are being a good pet owner that provides time to bond with the dog and one that gives the dog premium quality food.
